Dehumidifiers can work in cold rooms, but their effectiveness may be reduced at lower temperatures. Most standard household dehumidifiers are designed to operate optimally in temperatures above 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius). When the ambient temperature drops below this range, several factors can affect the dehumidifier's performance:

1. Reduced moisture removal: Whole house dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air by condensing it on cold coils. In colder rooms, the coils may not be as cold, which means they won't be as effective at removing moisture from the air.

2. Frost buildup: In extremely cold conditions, frost can accumulate on the coils, further reducing the dehumidifier's ability to remove moisture. Some dehumidifiers have a defrost feature to mitigate this issue, but it can still impact their overall efficiency.

3. Increased energy consumption: Dehumidifiers may need to work harder and consume more energy in colder environments, leading to higher operating costs.

If you need a fresh air dehumidifier for a cold room, there are a few options to consider:

1. Low-temperature dehumidifiers: Some manufacturers offer dehumidifiers specifically designed to operate in colder temperatures, typically down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) or lower. These units have special features to prevent frost buildup and maintain efficiency in cold environments.

2. Desiccant dehumidifiers: Unlike standard refrigerant-based dehumidifiers, desiccant dehumidifiers use a different technology that doesn't rely on cold coils. They can work effectively in colder rooms and are often used in applications where low-temperature operation is required.

3. Insulate the room: Improving the room's insulation can help maintain a slightly higher temperature, making it easier for a standard dehumidifier to operate more effectively.

Before purchasing a dehumidifier for a cold room, check the manufacturer's specifications and look for models that explicitly mention low-temperature operation or consider opting for a desiccant dehumidifier if it meets your needs. Remember that while dehumidifiers can still provide some benefit in colder rooms, their performance may not be as efficient as in warmer environments.
